Start: A brief to adapt and translate the award winning on-site educational offer at Tamworth Castle into a new Remote Educational Programme – a suite of original and high quality media, resources, and lesson plans, for Key Stage 1 to 4

this great adventure & co. were commissioned to develop the new AR trail app, Tamworth AR Explorer, as well as to develop this brand new online educational offer for schools and home learners // new revenue stream for Tamworth Castle

To deliver this project we brought an exciting team together, including educator and education consultant, Simon White, artist and film maker, Naresh Kaushal, with content planning, scripting, and production experts, TGAC and Kezi Gardom

Journey:
We began with a detailed review of Tamworth Castle’s existing onsite educational offer, and developing a narrative concept to capture and enhance these resources, working closely with in-house experts and external specialists.

The result was Tamworth Castle News — a fictional news agency ‘Reporting on 1,000 years of history!’ This flexible framework allowed us to adapt existing character performances and develop new ones with local reenactors.

The educational content explored the same themes and subjects in through structured media and activities tailored for age groups KS1-4. For younger students, actors performed fully in character, bringing historical periods to life. For older students, actors spoke both in and out of character, offering context and reflection on their time periods.

For Key Stage 4, we expanded beyond the Castle, collaborating with legal specialists from Royal Holloway University to create expert-led video content on Crime & Punishment through the ages.

For Buildings Through Time, we recorded interviews with the Castle’s Head of Education in different locations around the castle, capturing unique insights into the site’s architectural and social history and evolution over more than 1,000 years.

Destination:
From Castle Keep to Classroom — for the first time, Tamworth Castle developed a Remote Educational Programme: a suite of engaging, high-quality media and learning materials for Key Stages 1 to 4.

Our creative response centred on maximising existing resources, working closely with the Castle’s education and visitor teams to adapt their popular character-led experiences into short films and multimedia content. This ensured we captured years of expertise while creating fresh, classroom-friendly resources.

The Tamworth Castle News framework offered a coherent, flexible structure, easily adjustable for different age groups and future content — from special reports to student-led projects.

Designed to complement on-site learning, this digital programme connected online content with incentives like free student tickets and home-learning offers, creating a seamless link between Tamworth’s physical and digital engagement for schools, families, and young people.
