Project: NHS At 70 - The Story of Our Lives
With NHS At 70, The University of Manchester, Keymea Yazdanian, Mark Woods, Puifon Luong and beaufort bespoke.
Start: Since its formation in 1948, the NHS has touched the lives of millions of people and is a symbol of national identity. The Centre for the History of Health, Technology & Medicine in Manchester have been recording these amazing personal and professional stories.
Journey: How do you start with a subject this huge? We spoke to doctors, patients and volunteers. We mined into the unique NHS At 70 oral history archive. We created a lens to guide the selection process and thread the stories together - fundamentally, we agreed, the NHS is about ‘Moments of Care’. Talented photographer Keymea Yazdanian worked to capture original images for us of contributors to the archive and the NHS at work. An interactive audio installation and book lets visitors call up voices from the past, speaking about their Moments of Care experiences with the NHS from cradle to grave.
